Designer's Desk: SEO

Wed, Apr 1st 2009 04:00 pm

If you're currently taking advantage of the full Fission Content Management System (CMS), then you already possess powerful search engine optimization tools that can increase your site's visibility. But are you taking advantage of the small things that mean so much to search engines?

Matt Wetter, 360 PSG graphic designer, offers some quick tips to help you optimize your website pages.

4 Easy ways to help SEO your page

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) increases your website's chances of being found by search engines. Here are four simple suggestions to help you with your website's SEO.

Page Titles

Page titles appear at the top left corner of your web browser and should be about 6-12 words that pertain to your company or product. When brainstorming for a page title think about what someone would be searching for when looking for your company/product.

In the Fission CMS changing your page title is as easy as opening your page editor and changing the text where it reads "page title."

Meta Tags

When you edit a page in the Fission CMS, you will find a tab for "Search Engines." In this tab you will see two boxes: Meta Keywords and Meta Description. Both of these elements are important when you are trying to increase SEO on a page.

The Meta keywords box allows you to make a list, separated by commas, of words that pertain to your business or to that particular page.

The Meta description is a description of the page that you're creating or editing, rich with keywords geared toward your product and services.

Alt Tags

Alt tags are used when you place an image into your content.  Search engines don't recognize images, only the description and titles associated with them, so leaving these blank makes the image invisible to search engines.

When you place an image you will want to fill out a short description of the image in the title and image description boxes.  Keep in mind that this is another spot where you can use keywords to promote your business or organization.

File Name

File names are an extension of your URL and are also helpful for search engine optimization. (In case you're having trouble finding it, here's an example to show you where your file name is located: http://www.yourwebsite.com/content/pages/file-name.)

Be sure to use relevant keywords separated by dashes when creating a file name for your webpage.

If you don't currently have full control of your website with the powerful Fission CMS, consider an upgrade for your site. It could mean the difference between being found and being passed over.
