Get With the Programmer: Connecting Your Social Media Sites

Fri, Jan 1st 2010 10:00 am
Social networking sites are all the rage lately. You would be silly not to have a Facebook or Twitter account for your business, right? When we do seminars on social networking we always get asked a very simple but important question: How do I find the time to update my LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and blog with original and worthwhile content often enough to keep my followers interested?

This is an issue we all face, not specifically for social media marketing but with most of our daily tasks. There is just too much to do and not enough time to do it. So how do you maintain a healthy social media interactive campaign with limited resources? Aside from hiring a student intern to do it for you, the key is to leverage common information across all accounts.

The main thing to understand is that you are providing updates that are: a.) relevant, b.) timely, and c.) important to your audience. The information does not necessarily have to be unique on each site. For example, say you are holding a seminar (the title could be something like 'Social Media: Hype or Hope?'). You could send details about the event to all of your accounts, each with a relevant twist or information that would be directed to your followers on that site. For example your Twitter might have up-to-date details on interesting web statistics you might find while updating your notes, and your LinkedIn profile might say that you are looking for a new conference room for next time because there were twice as many registrants as expected.

Remember, the goal with Social Media campaigns is to create a social network around your site, product, or service. Your news, upcoming events and thoughts on your industry are all important to your followers. Providing interesting details can be made simpler by thinking about a common theme of what's going on with your business (or you) and what details would be useful to each audience.

Now if there was only a way to tie the information on your website to these accounts... Imagine how that could make your life even easier ;).
