Get with the Programmer: Is Your Website in Shape?
It's all about Image
When was the last time you changed the images on your site? Swapping out older images for newer ones can give your website a fresh look. Simply adding a new callout to the homepage for new products or site features can breathe new life into your site for returning visitors. Finally, have you remembered to name your images? Giving images names and alt tags makes them visible to search engines, which means one more part of your site is optimized.
Trim the fat
Speed up your page load time by making sure your pages (especially your home page) do not have large images. A common mistake made with content management systems is to upload large images and re-size them by selecting the image and using the handlebars to make the image smaller. While this makes the image look smaller on the web page, the image is actually still the same size, which means it still takes just as long to download and view in your visitor's browser. Instead, try re-sizing the actual image using your favorite image editing application before you upload it to the Fission CMS. We recommend 300 pixels max for either width or height.
Monitor your progress
I am always amazed when I ask someone how many visitors they are getting monthly and they have no idea. Take some time to get familiar with your analytics tools and monitor your site regularly. Information on how many people are visiting, where they are coming from, what they are viewing, and how long they are staying on your pages are essential to running a website. You may realize that you are not getting any traffic to a page you are spending an hour updating monthly. Knowing your site statistics can help guide your efforts to make sure you are making the best choices in deciding what types of marketing efforts or site updates need to be made.
