Designer's Desk: Calls to Action
Every website has a purpose, what's yours?
Your website needs a call to action. A call to action is the action that you want your visitors to take as soon as they enter your site.
What do you really want people to do on your site? Contact you? Make a donation? Order a product? Submit, Apply, Subscribe, Get Help, Get Support? Think like a consumer, what's the first thing you would do if you were visiting your website? What would you want your visitors to do? Now take that idea and make it as easy for them as possible.
By using a call to action your visitors are more likely to move in the right direction. Of course your site needs to have information about who you are and what you do, but once readers find out about your product give them a clear action to take. With content, it's important to get your message across to visitors, but remember that old adage: a picture is worth a thousand words? Calls to action break up content for readers and draw them to the most important areas of your website.
When you're setting up your website, try to think like your visitors. What do you do on a website when you see a button? You want to click on it. So make your call to action stand out. Make it noticeable just like this call to action, it really grabs the user attention. It puts strong emphasis the contest and takes the user directly to a page with more information! It's that simple!
Place your call to action somewhere on the page where you can see it before you have to scroll down too much.
